Free Clinics and Evaluations for 6th Grade Girls

WFBC will be offering some FREE workouts for 6th Grade girls at the new NZone facility on the following dates:

Sunday 12 Feb 8PM - 9PM @ NZone
Sunday 19 Feb 8PM - 9PM @ NZone
Sunday 26 Feb 8PM - 9PM @ NZone

We will be using these workouts to evaluate players for placement on the 2012 6th Grade Girls’ team. ALL interested players are invited)!

U14 Mustangs compete in ESPN Rise

The U14 Mustangs were a part of this year’s ESPN Rise Girls Showcase kicks off at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

The top eight teams from last year’s AAU Girls 13u National Championships were selected to compete in this prestigious event. The teams include: West Virginia Thunder, All Iowa Attack, Essence, Minnesota Stars, GA Pistols Gold, Dayton Lady Hoopsters, MBA Select, and WFBC Mustangs.
West Virginia is remembered for their buzzer-beater shot to take the title.

The USA U19 Women’s National basketball team will be in attendance for the weekend as well. The 15-woman roster will hold a training camp for four days at the Wide World of Sports Complex before playing Brazil on Sunday, June 5. The roster will then be trimmed to the final 12 women.

In between training, the team will hold a meet and greet session for all the participants on Saturday, June 4 at 5:15 p.m. EST where they’ll sign autographs for the girls and answer any questions they may have.

Pool play for the showcase will begin Friday, June 3. Semifinals begin at 4 p.m. EST on Saturday and culminate with the championship game on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. EST. The championship game will be broadcasted LIVE on ESPN3.com so be sure to tune in!

Mustang Alumni helps propel CNU to DIII 3rd Place

Christopher Newport finished the greatest season in program history in the winner's circle Saturday - and gave head coach Carolyn Hunter a great birthday present - by topping host Illinois Wesleyan 64-58 in the third-place game of the NCAA Division III championships.

Amherst (32-1), which defeated CNU in Friday's semifinals, went on to claim the national title with a 64-55 victory over defending champion Washington University.

Captains star Chelsie Schweers scored a game-high 23 points and finished the tournament with a Division III-record 174 points in the six games. The program's first-ever four-time All-American ends her career with a Division III-record 415 3-pointers and 2,869 points, second on the D-III all-time scoring list and the most by any women's player at a Virginia college at any level.

But as has been the case all season, Schweers had plenty of help Saturday. Kimmy Hopkins had 11 points - 9 pivotal ones in the second half - on 5-of-7 shooting in just 18 minutes. Lauren Gural (Chantilly HS & WFBC Alumni), who had a double-double in Friday's semifinals, added 10 points in the third-place game. Rebounding ace Barbara Davis had 8 points and 11 boards. And freshman Chantal Thomas came up huge in her career-high 25-minute stint with solid defense, poise against the Illinois Wesleyan press and two big free throws with 18 seconds left that expanded CNU's advantage to 4.

Schweers was the lone Captain named to the all-tournament team. The tournament's most outstanding player was Amherst's Caroline Stedman.

The Captains ended with a 30-4 record, the program's second straight 30-win season and the second-best record in team history after last season's 30-1 mark.

U14 Showcase Wins Deep South

The U14 Showcase continued their winning ways as they finished 1st out of 32 teams in the Deep South Classic held on the campuses at University of North Carolina, North Carolina State University, and Duke University. Tom Watson’s team went 5-0 with victories over the Western PA Bruins, the Georgia Pistols, the Charlotte Rivals (NC), the X-Citement Future (IL), and the West Virginia Panthers. This is the first time that a WFBC team has won such a prestigious event.

April Robinson named 1st Team All Met

April Robinson (West Springfield HS, WFBC Showcase) was named 1st Team All Met in this week’s Washington Post.

April is the first WFBC player to be selected for this honor and we are happy for her and her family. During the past season, April led her team to the District and Northern Region championships and to the Virginia state semi-finals. She also became the 2nd player in West Springfield High School history to score 1,000 points (the other being WBNA and Olympic Gold Medalist, Kara Lawson).

U14 Showcase Wins Boo Williams Super Regional

The U14s went undefeated this weekend and came away with a gold medal at the Boo Williams Super Regional. This is their first test in their bid for the upcoming AAU national championship this summer. The U14 team heads to Deep South on April 15.
